Mathnasium Hires Chief Development Officer

2022-12-20T11:54:03-05:00December 20th, 2022|Tags: , , |

Kevin Shen Leads Brand Development for Internationally Known Math Learning Centers.

LOS ANGELES — Mathnasium, an international franchise leader with over 1,000 math tutoring centers and counting, has appointed Kevin Shen as Chief Development Officer.

Kevin joins Mathnasium with 13 years of investment banking and franchising experience. For the last eight years, he has been an executive at Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc., mostly recently serving as the Vice President, Head of Real Estate Development and Franchise Sales.

The hiring follows recent c-level leadership changes announced earlier this year as the company continues to invest in the direction and support system for franchisees.

“Being immersed in the franchising and investment banking world, I had always admired private equity backed brands and have a ton of respect for Michael Davis and his extensive experience as a CEO working with top-notch companies. As I met more of the leadership team and franchisees, it became clear why this is the perfect time to join Mathnasium with its endless industry tailwinds,” said Shen. “It is also so easy to get behind the mission of changing lives through math. Our reputable global brand and the passion behind our franchisees is so authentic, it cannot be replicated.”

Shen and the team will be hyper-focused on growing Mathnasium’s footprint, attracting more multi-center operators and supporting existing franchisees with expansion.

“It was important to find a leader like Kevin who aligns with Mathnasium’s values and believes in our larger mission to make math enjoyable by teaching true comprehension,” said Michael Davis, CEO of Mathnasium. “Our franchisees are seeing record breaking enrollments as families seek additional local resources to help their children improve grades in math and reach new levels of understanding. Every new center ensures Mathnasium’s mission will get to more student’s, families, and communities.”

Mathnasium hit over 100,000 enrollments in the U.S. for the first time in the company’s history as the spike in supplemental education continues to climb.

Based on the findings of The Nation’s Report Card 2022, which is conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, a branch of the Education Department – math scores show major decline for Fourth and Eighth-Graders throughout the pandemic.

“Our Center Directors, math instructors and small business owners around the world are using the time-tested Mathnasium Method to make a difference in their local communities,” said Shen. “We’re intentionally growing this brand because of the rewarding results for both students, families and franchisees. Our high NPS scores and annual accolades show that we have a fantastic playbook for how to thrive in the math education sector.”

Mathnasium retains its position as the leader in the math tutoring space by offering comprehensive assessments, fully individualized learning plans, and teaching true math comprehension. The Mathnasium Method™ is a proven proprietary teaching method and the driving force behind the company’s growth since 2002.

The Haslam College of Business Debuts Innovative Franchise Certificate Program

2022-12-20T11:49:18-05:00December 20th, 2022|Tags: , , , , |

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Unveils New Program for Aspiring Entrepreneurs.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Haslam College of Business via the Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, welcomes the 2023 inaugural class for a brand new offering: The Franchise Certificate Program. The university continues to strive toward the strategic initiative of building a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem across Tennessee and the region, with franchising being a foundational part of that ecosystem.

“More and more people are turning to franchising as a means to entrepreneurship where they are in business for themselves, not by themselves.  That could mean working for a franchisor to support franchisees or becoming a franchisee themselves,” said program donor, and founder and CEO of BrightStar Care, Shelly Sun (HCB, ’92). “When I founded BrightStar Care in 2002, and then began franchising in 2005, it gave me a deeper understanding of franchising and a path to the success that I wish for every entrepreneur. Through this new program we will teach students the fundamentals of franchising and provide them with knowledge that will support whatever career path they ultimately choose.”

BrightStar Care, a home health care franchise dedicated to providing both medical and non-medical assistance for families and individuals in need has grown to more than 365 locations represented by 200 small businesses and reached $639M in revenue in 2021. BrightStar Care is consistently named in Forbes’ Top Ten Franchises under a $150,000 initial investment.

The Franchise Certificate Program provides entrepreneurs with support and training on the many facets of franchising. Students considering a career with a franchisor or simply those that desire deeper franchise knowledge can benefit from the comprehensive curriculum which will include:

  • Education on the franchising industry
  • Best practices for operating a franchise business
  • Insight from franchise industry professionals
  • Networking with other students interested in franchising

“The first priority of The Franchise Business Program is to provide entrepreneurial options for potential future business owners,” said Lynn Youngs, executive director of the Anderson Center. “We are not only aiming to educate, but also to make a difference in the community by creating jobs, supporting the next generation of small business owners with a sound basis for entering the entrepreneurial marketplace, and providing innovative strategies for successful business practices.”

To help build the Franchise Certificate Program, Cordell Riley, a franchising expert with nearly 30 years of experience, aims to build the program out in the coming years to include minor and major offerings specifically in franchising.

“Over the next decade we will help to create entrepreneurs that will make a difference in our communities and leverage the ever-so-important entrepreneurial spirit we have as Americans,” said Riley, program faculty member.

An advisory board consisting of franchisors, franchisees, franchise vendors, and other entrepreneurial representatives including Shelly Sun, Lynn Youngs, Tamra Kennedy, Tom Wood, Sherri Fishman and Cordell Riley will advise on the development of program content to ensure the franchise industry and the program work collaboratively to deliver the most knowledgeable future entrepreneurs in the country.

Item 9 Labs Corp.’s Dispensary Brand Strengthens East Coast Footprint with First New Jersey Shop

2022-12-16T10:23:52-05:00December 16th, 2022|Tags: , , , , , , |

  • Local Entrepreneur Awarded Recreational Business License for Unity Rd. Cannabis Dispensary in Franklin Township in Somerset County, N.J.
  • New Development Brings Unity Rd. Footprint To Four U.S. States and Into the Northeast Region.

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J.Item 9 Labs Corp. (OTCQX: INLB)—a vertically integrated U.S. cannabis franchisor and operator—announced today that its dispensary franchise, Unity Rd., is expanding its footprint with a new store in Franklin Township in Somerset County, N.J. This marks the fourth U.S. state for the burgeoning cannabis retail brand, and it is anticipated to be the first location to open on the East Coast.

The local Unity Rd. shop owner, Dishen Patel, received approval from the state of New Jersey and municipality of Franklin Township in Somerset County for a recreational business license. This approval is among the first licenses the state has awarded, outside of existing medicinal cannabis businesses that were converted after the recreational sale of cannabis was legalized in New Jersey. The entrepreneur has deep experience in private equity investing in consumer-driven brands, including several restaurant concepts with a franchise infrastructure.

The Company signed a licensing agreement with Patel as a vendor contractor, stating that Item 9 Labs Corp. will provide him with consulting services across real estate, licensing, compliance, operations, product procurement and marketing, among others. The Company’s Unity Rd. team is aiding him through every step of the process of opening his cannabis retail store, setting him up to confidently operate a compliant cannabis business in his local community.

“Introducing our Unity Rd. brand to New Jersey represents another company milestone. Not only will we be entering a new cannabis market, but we are expanding our footprint in a high-population region that is increasingly supporting legalization,” said Item 9 Labs Corp. CEO, Mike Weinberger. “We believe that as the New Jersey adult-use cannabis market continues to take off, the industry will reflect positively on the state’s economy and residents.”

New Jersey’s recreational cannabis reform bills were signed into law on February 22, 2021, and legal sales began on April 21, 2022. According to New Jersey’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission, recreational sales on the first day of operation reached nearly $1.9 million and rapidly increased to $80 million through the initial 10 weeks. The 2022 MJBiz Factbook projects the market will exceed $2 billion by 2026.

Weinberger continued, “With a population of approximately 8.8 million people and bustling metro areas like New York City and Philadelphia bordering the state, we anticipate the emerging cannabis market will become one of the largest on the East Coast.”

New York and Connecticut are expected to begin adult-use cannabis sales in 2023 and several other Northeastern states are poised to push reform forward. With the region representing over 16 percent of the U.S. population, increased legalization will be a significant growth driver for the cannabis industry.

Patel joins three additional entrepreneurial groups that have signed agreements with the Company to develop Unity Rd. shops across New Jersey and are currently in various stages of development.

Latest Innovative ‘Town Square’ Adult Daycare, Memory Care Center Opens

2022-12-15T10:29:59-05:00December 15th, 2022|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Sixth in the franchise and first in Atlanta, Town Square Sandy Springs offers support that may delay progression of Alzheimer’s, other dementias.

ATLANTATown Square® Sandy Springs, an innovative adult day center for those in need of memory or cognitive care, is now open. The first of its kind in Atlanta and the sixth in the U.S., the facility offers experiential adult day enrichment.

“Our person-centered, strengths-based approach to healthy aging supports interventions that reduce risk for disease, may delay dementia progression and postpone the need for long-term care,” says Town Square Sandy Springs Director Mary Caldwell, an experienced and credentialed gerontologist. “We are committed to serving our members, but also any person impacted by Alzheimer’s or dementia by providing free care consultation, care planning, care partner support groups and education.”

Town Square provides a safe, comforting and immersive environment where members spend the day while caretakers are at work, running errands or taking a break from daily routines. Members – as Town Square day guests are called – take part in a range of engaging activities facilitated by highly qualified Program Assistants (with an 8-to-1 caregiver/participant ratio) who leverage therapeutic reminiscing techniques to spark memories and stimulate the mind.

“The impetus for Town Square was to be part of the innovation of the adult day space,” says Kellen Stennett, owner of Town Square Sandy Springs. “We saw a huge need to elevate the level of dignity and compassion of people who need cognitive or memory care. I’m proud of the impact we’re making in the north Atlanta community.”

The 12,000-sq. ft., state-of-the-art facility (8601 Dunwoody Place, Suite 130, just off GA 400 Exit 6) resembles a mid-century American town, with 13 stylized activity rooms representing popular storefronts that existed during that era: a 1950’s diner; Starlite Theater; a music room called Spinners; Health Club with themed exercise; a vintage 1964 Ford Thunderbird; as well as a library; working hair and nail salon; craft room; recreation room, among others.

“There is an incredible demand in Atlanta and around the country for quality daycare and resource centers for those with dementia,” says Pete Spillum, VP of Operations and Franchising for Town Square. “We are delighted to serve seniors while also giving caregivers a respite from 24/7 care.”

In addition to daytime programming (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), Town Square is available for rent, evenings and weekends, for corporate meetings, birthday and anniversary parties, and group visits from senior living facilities.

Spillum notes that the seventh Town Square will open in Bradenton, FL later this year. In addition to Atlanta (Sandy Springs), other Town Square locations include Sarasota, FL; Perry Hall, MD; Jersey Shore (Brunswick), NJ; Princeton, NJ; and (NW) Austin, TX. Four additional locations are in-process to open in 2023: two additional New Jersey locations, one in North Carolina and one in Las Vegas. As the population shifts, the 50’s and 60’s theme of Town Square facilities will roll through subsequent decades.

About Town Square®

Town Square is the first adult day center model grounded in reminiscence therapy, specifically for individuals with Alzheimer’s or related dementias. A product of the renowned George G. Glenner Centers, its proprietary programming evokes a time when seniors were teens or young adults. Reminiscence therapy has been shown to improve mood, communication and sleep quality, while also reducing anxiety, depression and agitation in those with dementia. Prompts such as movies, music, images, games and other vintage props stimulate long-term memories.

New Orleans-Based Coffeehouse Chain Awards Franchisees for Excellence, and Recognized for Company-wide Impact on the Veteran Community.

NEW ORLEANS — PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans, the coffeehouse known for its “southern hospitality” experience, is celebrating being named to the 2022 Top Franchises for Veterans by Entrepreneur. This news follows the brand’s annual conference, where PJ’s Coffee recognized their top performers and other notable achievements.

PJ’s Coffee believes in brewing up small business opportunities for military veterans, which is why it was ranked 147 of 150 franchises on Entrepreneur’s Top Franchises for Veterans List of 2022. This award is targeted towards franchises that work to setup veterans for success and get them involved in the franchising space. The ranking is based on the company’s veteran incentive, the support system and how the company scored in the 2022 Franchise 500.

“Helping veterans prosper as business owners after they have sacrificed so much for our country, it’s the least we can do, and we want to do everything in our power to set these vet-preneurs up for success,” said Ryan Stansbury, PJ’s Coffee Vice President of Franchise Development. “Over time we have continued to see veterans thrive in this role as a franchisee, and we welcome the interest of others with open arms.”

In addition to their national recognition, the leading coffee brand also honored their own franchisees for their involvement with the community. The following recipients received The Community Involvement Award: Stephanie Chambliss (New Orleans, LA), Ever and Maraleana Saenz (Monahans, TX), Tyra and Mike Harris (Bowie, MD), John and Angie Lambert (Brookhaven, MS), Bobby and Kristy Mounts (Ruston, LA), Harry and Dalton Dodich (Spanish Fort, AL), Mark and Parker Sheets (Grand Prairie, TX) and Amanda Bennett (Hammond– SW Railroad, LA). About PJ’s Coffee

PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans was founded in 1978 by Phyllis Jordan, a pioneer in the coffee industry. The coffeehouse was acquired by Ballard Brands in 2008 which was spearheaded by brothers Paul, Scott and Steve Ballard. The New Orleans-based coffeehouse demonstrates that better beans, superior roasting techniques, and pure passion for the art of coffee-making matter. The brand serves a wide variety of hot, iced and frozen coffee beverages using only the top one percent of Arabica beans, as well as organic tea and fresh breakfast pastries. Utilizing a special cold-drip process that makes the coffee less acidic, and protects the flavor of the beans for their cold brew, PJ’s Coffee prioritizes the care that goes into their products. Their small-batch roasting process allows them to create unique profiles in a very consistent manner. A variety of flavored coffees, such as the famous Southern Pecan, are created in such a way that the nutritional facts are not altered, no added calories and no added sugar. With more than 155 operating stores, including four international locations, PJ’s Coffee continues to grow in the U.S. and abroad. The DRIPBaR Partners with Original Shark Kevin Harrington

IV Therapy Franchise Welcomes Original “Shark Tank” Investor, Kevin Harrington, as Key Brand Investor.

WRENTHAM, Mass. — The DRIPBaR, an IV vitamin therapy franchise growing rapidly across America, is thrilled to announce they have partnered with entrepreneur, investor, and original “Shark Tank” shark, Kevin Harrington. Providing cells with the nutritional “fuel” through IV therapy, the franchise is experiencing tremendous annual growth as well as rapidly expanding across the nation. Harrington, a proponent of IV vitamin therapy for over five years, has cut ties with other IV infusion brands, investing fully in The DRIPBaR. With its already proven business model and devoted CEO, Ben Crosbie, Harrington is excited to extend the brands presence throughout the nation and beyond.

“I am ecstatic to be able to announce that The DRIPBaR has partnered with one of the most successful and charismatic entrepreneurs and investors in the US,” said Crosbie. “This is a huge step for The DRIPBaR and solidifies that there is a need for what we are doing with IV vitamin therapy around the nation. I am optimistic for the future and excited to see where this partnership takes our brand.”

Harrington, an original “shark” on the hit TV show Shark Tank, the creator of the infomercial, pioneer of the As Seen on TV brand, and a co-founding board member of the Entrepreneur’s Organization got his start selling newspapers on the street at the age of nine and launched his first business at fifteen—sealing driveways in the hot summer sun. He soon graduated to selling high-end baby high chairs door-to-door but did not experience breakthrough success until he met an experienced guide. As Harrington soaked up their wisdom, his personal and business growth began to skyrocket, and by his first year in college, he had built his first million-dollar enterprise. Harrington then began selling franchises and working with entrepreneurs to further their success, offering the same wisdom as he had once received. Today, Harrington’s business ventures have produced well over $5 billion in global sales, the launch of more than 500 products, and the making dozens of millionaires. 22 of his companies have each topped $100 million in revenue, and with this new partnership, he is looking to make The DRIPBaR number 23.

“People of all ages are realizing now more than ever the importance of proactive healthcare. The DRIPBaR is allowing their clients and members to be the best version of themselves by treating the mind and body directly,” said Harrington. “The DRIPBaR is bringing a modern and accessible approach to help individuals live their best lives paired with the upmost care for their patients. I am excited to be able to partner with a pioneer within the IV therapy industry and bring the brand one step closer in their goal of turning cellular health into a lifestyle.”

Each DRIPBaR location offers 20 IV Lifestyle or Health Support drips including the Jet Setter, Time Machine, Restoration, Flu Fighter, and High C. All IV drips are handled by registered nurses under the guidance of a licensed medical director. For those who don’t have time for a full IV vitamin infusion but are looking for the benefit, The DRIPBaR can give your body a boost in just five minutes with one of its five IM Quick Shots. IV therapy provides positive nourishment for conditions such as the common cold, headaches, cancer, and chronic illness and even helps slow the signs of aging.
