For anyone seeking the opportunity to offer both home-improvement and business customers a truly remarkable product, Boulder Designs may be a rock-solid match.
The brand sets itself apart with a unique process in which structures are formed using sand that can be customized to any shape or size. The result is a variety of attractive yet functional pieces that can adorn residences or businesses, from boulders to address markers and mailboxes to fence posts.
“There’s a flavor for everybody,” said Butch Mogavero, CEO of Boulder Designs. Custom signs for businesses can include the company logo in any color, while a homeowner can select a stone structure or mailbox displaying an address number that complements a home’s exterior.
One of their newest offerings is headstones, which are growing in popularity due to their affordability. “We can make them for a fraction of what they typically cost,” Mogavero explained. “They look a lot nicer than the typical drab headstones.”
The wide profit margins are one of the biggest advantages for franchise owners, according to Mogavero. While the company offers new franchise owners training in all of their production processes, Mogavero said the most successful are not spending their time on construction, but on sales and marketing.
“If you take all your time building, you aren’t out there all day selling. That’s where the money’s at,” Mogavero noted.
To support their franchise owners’ marketing efforts, Boulder Designs has launched a new digital-marketing program. The company creates each location’s social-media accounts on popular platforms such as Facebook, Google, and Instagram.
“Social media has made a big impact on our business,” said Mogavero, who explained that expanding the brand’s online presence has really helped sustain the company’s success throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Before this, the company placed a significant emphasis on marketing efforts in trade shows. But when the virus halted such in-person events, they ramped up their digital marketing campaigns. The transition has been successful, and while Mogavero looks forward to the day trade shows will resume, he understands the power of digital marketing. “Social media will always be a major part of our business, in addition to the face-to-face shows,”
he said.
While the pandemic may have negatively impacted other businesses, Mogavero has found his business flourish over the past year. “It has not slowed us down. We have franchises who have had record years,” he said.
Aside from being a pandemic-resistant business, prospective franchise owners may also find the low initial investment of $109,000 very attractive. Another secret to the brand’s success is that it is not a seasonal business but a year-round business.
“We never stop. We can work every day of the year,” Mogavero emphasized.
