Jason Kuriger, franchise owner and operator of Mr. Transmission/Milex in Crest Hill, Illinois, explained why the feeling of family is important. “I had a rough upbringing. We moved 13 times up through high school, and I went to 10 schools. I know how important family and feeling supported are,” shared Kuriger. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps right after high school because he knew the structure would be good for him. The military taught him to recognize what someone brings to the table and how that can positively impact others.
“I’ve worked in automotive ever since I left the Marine Corps. I’ve worked on both the service and sales side for several dealerships, but I got to the point where I wanted my own business.” There was a Milex location within one mile of Kuriger’s house. He was torn between starting his own shop or purchasing the Milex. “Let’s face it: no one wants to pay franchise fees, but it’s worth it if it has value. Moran Family of Brands had great support systems and a respected brand. It was a smaller automotive franchise but had such a family environment, and I gravitated to it.”
Right next to the Milex was a Mr. Transmission. When that store became available, Kuriger jumped at the opportunity to expand. “We started with two technicians seven and a half years ago and grew to six technicians. I now own the building and the two brands. We quadrupled the business, going from 1,000 service tickets annually to 4,000. I’m the first one here in the morning and the last one to leave at night. I like being the face of the business, and I appreciate my staff. If I put in the work, the business will thrive. That’s important because it’s how my employees support their families.”
