Right at Home Caregiver Who Saved Client From Texas Snowstorm Recognized as National Caregiver of the Year

2022-05-02T09:51:30-04:00May 2nd, 2022|Tags: , , , , |

Keshia Prejean received the honor as one out of 25,000 caregivers across the Right at Home network, at the company’s national conference.

OMAHA, Neb. — On April 29, 600 cheering representatives of leading in-home care company Right at Home honored Keshia Prejean as 2022 National Caregiver of the Year at the company’s national conference in Glendale, Arizona. Prejean was selected from more than 25,000 caregivers across the Right at Home network for her exemplary commitment to making a difference in the lives of her clients and team members.

Prejean has been with Right at Home for two years, working as a caregiver in the Texas Hill Country for owners Sydney Greenwalt and Terry Darilek. Prejean’s compassion, selflessness and willingness to go above and beyond have made her a valued member of Right at Home and a beloved caregiver for seniors in her community.

Last year, central Texas experienced unprecedented snowfall, including widespread power outages, burst water lines and road closures. But did that stop Prejean from going to work and making a difference? “It didn’t slow her down one bit,” said Greenwalt. “She knew one of our clients was bed bound with no resources and no family. So unbeknownst to us, Keshia flagged down a snowplow driver and had him take her to our client’s home. She weather-proofed the home, tracked down water and walked to the store in the snow to buy food.”

Prejean stayed almost a week with her client, sacrificing the needs of her own family to help someone in need. “EMS and Fire Rescue were unable to access roads during the first few days of the storm,” said Greenwalt. “I’m convinced our client would not have survived without Keshia’s help.”

According to Keysha Friar, Director of Employee Relations at Right at Home Hill Country, Prejean’s generosity isn’t reserved only for her clients. “Keshia doesn’t just help our clients, she is so loving toward her co-workers too,” said Friar. “We recently received a phone call from one of our caregivers who wanted to let us know how wonderful Keshia is. Apparently Keshia found out another caregiver was having transportation issues so she booked and paid for a $75 Uber to take this caregiver to our client’s home. Of course we reimbursed Keshia for this, but she never mentioned it to us and didn’t request reimbursement. That says a lot about who Keshia is.”

National Caregiver of the Year is the highest honor awarded by the Right at Home network. The award is presented annually during the organization’s annual conference.

“Right at Home is so proud and thrilled to honor Keshia Prejean as our 2022 National Caregiver of the Year,” said Margaret Haynes, President and CEO of Right at Home. “The award honors those caregivers who provide extraordinary service to clients every day, and Keshia has definitely illustrated the very essence of the award. She continually lives our mission, ‘To improve the quality of life for those we serve.’ We are so grateful that Keshia is part of Right at Home.”

In addition to honoring Prejean nationally, Right at Home recognized eight caregivers across the country for their outstanding commitment to their clients. This year’s Regional Caregivers of the Year are:

  • West Region Caregiver of the Year: Maria Castro of Burbank, California
(office owners Leanna and Doug Dickstein)
  • East Central Region Caregiver of the Year: Candy Palmer of Wilmington, North Carolina (office owner Jennifer Selden)
  • Northwest Central Region Caregiver of the Year: Marci Meader of Reno, Nevada
(office owners Pete Kuzmich and Shayne Brown)
  • Mid-Atlantic Region Caregiver of the Year: Sarah Williams of Fairfax, Virginia
    (office owner Phill Turner)
  • Southwest Region Caregiver of the Year: Vodrick Morrison of San Antonio, Texas
(office owners Sloane and Jim Wendell)
  • Southeast Region Caregiver of the Year: Anice Browning of Little Rock, Arkansas
    (office owner Lauren Miller)
  • Northeast Region Caregiver of the Year: Tanya Todd of Hillsborough, New Jersey
(office owners Janet and Carl Kuebler)
  • Midwest Region Caregiver of the Year: Larry Sharon of West Des Moines, Iowa
(office owner Raouf Agrignan and operator Christina Richter)

Going the extra mile to provide exceptional care for those in need of at-home assistance often comes down to the small things which make a big difference in a client’s life. Right at Home is proud to recognize the exemplary caregivers within its system whose purpose-driven work betters the lives of those they are entrusted to serve.

OMAHA, Neb. — Right at Home, a subsidiary of RiseMark and a leading in-home senior care brand, announced today that Margaret Haynes has been named President and CEO.

Haynes has more than 25 years of senior management experience, including a decade on the leadership team at Right at Home—eight of which were spent as the Chief Operating Officer. As the COO, she was responsible for overseeing day-to-day company operations and enhancing the internal infrastructure in support of Right at Home’s strategic vision. Her guiding focus has been helping local offices build sustainable, profitable businesses while delivering a model that best serves the global need for home care.

“Margaret is the perfect leader for Right at Home,” said James B. Hyler Jr., RiseMark Board Chairman. “She is a visionary with a proven track record of execution. Her extensive home-care experience coupled with her desire to continue Right at Home’s mission of improving the quality of life for those they serve made her the obvious choice. We are excited about the future with Margaret at the helm.”

“I am thrilled to be stepping into this role,” said Haynes. “Right at Home was founded over 25 years ago with the goal of helping seniors and their families navigate the aging journey. By 2030 almost 9 million people in the United States will be over the age of 85. Our corporate team, local franchise owners and the fantastic caregivers around the globe are committed to helping those seniors live successfully in their homes. It’s a big responsibility and Right at Home is poised to make it happen.”

Haynes, a Nebraska native, graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a B.S. in accounting and business management. She holds an MBA in personnel and human resource management from the University of Colorado Boulder. Prior to joining Right at Home, Haynes was the Senior Vice President of Financial Services at First Data Corporation.

“Right at Home continues to amaze us with their ability to expand the company’s reach, thus touching more lives in meaningful ways,” said Hyler. “We believe Margaret will propel the organization forward and she has our full support as she leads the company to even greater growth.”

Right at Home Joins HomesRenewed Coalition

2022-01-25T11:10:04-05:00January 25th, 2022|Tags: , , , , |

Coalition seeks policies for needed home modifications to support aging in place.

OMAHA, Neb. — Right at Home, one of the world’s foremost providers of in-home care for seniors and adults with disabilities, has joined other leading brands in the senior care market as a member of the HomesRenewed Coalition. The coalition supports policies that encourage modifications to existing homes to help older adults age in place.

“Right at Home appreciates the work of the HomesRenewed Coalition and finds that its goal of seeking policies that allow tax incentives for home modifications fits well with the Right at Home mission, to improve the lives of those we serve,” said Brian Petranick, President and CEO of Right at Home. “Historically, housing design did not take into account the aging process and the physical constraints it imposes on seniors and adults living with disabilities who want to age in their home environment. Tax policy to incentivize these much-needed modifications would pay for itself over time with reduced fall risk and less utilization of more costly care options.”

While presenting at the Gerontological Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting last November, Dr. Jesse Abraham with the HomesRenewed Resource Center reported an alarming statistic: According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 American Housing Survey, of the 14 million households headed by someone over age 75, 46% had an acknowledged accessibility problem (either entering the home; or getting to or using the bathroom, kitchen or bedroom).

Surveys have revealed the desire of seniors to remain in their homes longer, and there are numerous proposals, pilots and initiatives to introduce more care in the home. However, older homes in which many seniors reside often have steep stairs, unsafe or nonexistent railings, uneven surfaces, and poor lighting that do not accommodate the aging process.

The coalition calls on Congress to enact policies that:

  • Allow individuals to use their pre-tax retirement accounts tax- and penalty-free to pay for aging-in-place modifications in their homes.
  • Create tax credits or deductions for homeowners who proactively prepare their homes for aging in place.

Tax incentives for age-friendly design elements would help improve homes for older adults and allow them to age in place and receive more health care services in the home. These design elements could include improvements such as railings on stairways, ramps to access entryways, and accessible features in kitchens and bathrooms.

Right at Home’s expertise in navigating the aging care journey will help the HomesRenewed Coalition in its advocacy efforts for accessible homes for seniors.

About HomesRenewed Coalition:
The HomesRenewed Coalition’s mission is to significantly increase the number of American homes prepared for residents to live throughout the modern lifespan. We promote the establishment of consumer incentives for home updates on Wall Street, Main Street, and Capitol Hill. Updated homes are the missing link needed to avoid a crisis in housing and care for older Americans, which threatens the long-term solvency of the social safety net. This broad-based coalition uses education and advocacy to promote market-based solutions to reduce medical costs, improve the delivery of services, and increase the dignity, choice, and independence of older Americans living in their homes in their communities. By crossing sectors and unifying voices, we are launching an “Aging in Place Industry.” Our members include Lowe’s, Lifeway Mobility, LifewiseCHM, Axxess, Seniors Homes Services, VGM Live at Home, National Seating & Mobility, TruBlue Total House Care, Right at Home, Age Safe America, HandyPRo, Home Safety Services, and many others. Right at Home Franchises Recognized With Caring.com’s “Caring Star of 2022” Award

2021-12-10T15:48:56-05:00December 10th, 2021|Tags: , , , , |

Right at Home Leads Nation for Most Winning Agencies for Fourth Consecutive Year.

OMAHA, Neb. — Caring.com, a trusted resource for families looking for in-home care for their aging loved ones, released its annual “Caring Stars” list for 2022. The list, based on consumer ratings and reviews, features the top in-home care agencies in the United States every year.

Right at Home, one of the world’s leading providers of in-home care for seniors and adults with disabilities, is pleased to announce that of the 518 in-home care agencies that received the Caring Star of 2022 award, 183 of them are Right at Home agencies.

The Caring.com list also highlights those organizations recognized as “Caring Super Stars of 2022.” These agencies received the Caring Star award for 2022 and two additional years since 2017. There were 332 in-home care agencies that received the Caring Super Star of 2022 award, and of those, 157 are Right at Home agencies, more than any other company. This achievement makes Right at Home No. 1 in the nation for the fourth consecutive year.

“It is our mission at Right at Home to improve the quality of life for those we serve,” said Right at Home President and CEO Brian Petranick. “The Right at Home franchisees, their office staffs, and caregivers spend countless hours improving the quality of life for the residents in their local communities. This recognition from Caring.com is a representation of the level of service and quality care they provide to clients and their families each and every day.”

In-home care agencies had to meet extraordinary criteria to make the 2022 Caring Stars list. They needed a minimum of 10 consumer reviews with an overall rating of at least 4.5 stars on a 1-5 scale on their Caring.com listing by Oct. 15, 2021. In addition, the in-home care agencies were required to have three or more reviews on their Caring.com listing between Oct. 15, 2020, and Oct. 15, 2021, with one or more published in 2021. Another requirement included a five-star rating in at least one of the recent reviews.

Significantly, agencies needed to respond to all negative reviews on their listing to qualify. Negative reviews are those that were rated one or two stars.

“We applaud our valued partners at Right at Home on being #1 in the nation for Caring Stars 2022, with the most winning listings of any senior care organization for the fourth consecutive year,” said Caring’s CEO Jim Rosenthal. “Congratulations to Right at Home for earning such high praise from its customers in online ratings and reviews. These agencies are staffed with caregivers who dedicate their careers to helping seniors—and it shows.”

Right at Home’s continued success can be linked to its commitment to its mission of improving the quality of life for those they serve. Honors like these are a testament to the exceptional and individualized care experience Right at Home franchisees, their staffs and caregivers provide to seniors and adults with disabilities every day.

Right at Home Says Families Are the Key to a Dementia-Friendly Future

2021-09-20T11:22:32-04:00September 20th, 2021|Tags: , , , , |

With World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21, the in-home health care brand highlights the benefits of intergenerational relationships and the importance of dementia education.

OMAHA, Neb. — In recognition of World Alzheimer’s Day on Sept. 21, Right at Home, the leading global in-home health care brand, is emphasizing the important role that families, specifically children, play in the cognitive health of seniors.

With age being the top risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia, grandchildren may likely have grandparents who are living with memory loss. Dementia can profoundly change family relationships—including the connection between grandparents and grandchildren.

“While involved grandparents play a powerful, positive force in their grandchildren’s lives both developmentally and emotionally, we often forget the role that grandchildren play in the lives of their proud grandparents,” said Margaret Haynes, Right at Home COO. “More and more, we’re seeing that intergenerational relationships are mutually beneficial and can have dramatic effects on health.”

For families of seniors who have Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, it’s important to be open and honest with grandchildren about the changes in their grandparent’s behavior and memory.

“Adult children who are overwhelmed with caregiving tasks can sometimes lose sight of how their own children are affected by a grandparent’s dementia,” said Haynes. “Parents might be unsure of how to discuss the grandparent’s condition, but silence is the worst policy—without information, children can be more frightened and emotionally distressed about their grandparent’s change in personality.”

The National Institute on Aging advises parents to be open with children, using statements like, “Grandma has an illness that makes it hard for her to remember things.” Comforting children and letting them know it’s normal to feel sad or angry can help them come to terms with the cognitive changes in their grandparent.

According to Right at Home, families can facilitate activities that grandparents with Alzheimer’s and their grandchildren can do together, including arts and crafts, singing or listening to music, looking at photo albums, and even doing household chores.

If the grandparent with dementia lives at home with the children, parents should make the children’s needs a priority, spending time with them, enabling them to continue to take part in activities, and minimizing the children having to provide supervision for the person with dementia. Professional in-home care services from Right at Home can help.

Right at Home’s Dementia and Cognitive Support Program uses a person-centered approach to educate, empower, encourage and engage the entire family. The cornerstone of the program is that every person, no matter how advanced their disease, has the ability to be present and aware of their surroundings. Right at Home works with families to create a custom care plan that focuses on the person’s history, routines and preferences, and then implements support activities around nutrition, socialization, awareness and wellness.

Families fulfill a critical role in Right at Home’s approach. To support seniors living with dementia and cognitive change, Right at Home helps families learn techniques to connect, encourage participation in activities, and relate to their loved one in ways that empower their abilities.

“World Alzheimer’s Day is a great time to honor the grandparents who provide so much unconditional love for the younger generation, passing down guidance and values, and helping busy parents,” said Haynes. “It’s also a great time to focus on dementia education.”

Right at Home Partners With the National Minority Health Association to Encourage Community-wide Vaccinations Against COVID-19

2021-08-27T11:05:34-04:00August 27th, 2021|Tags: , , , , |

OMAHA, Neb. — The National Minority Health Association (NMHA) recently launched the “Flex for Checks” program to encourage COVID-19 vaccinations through a monetized reward program. With assistance from an $11.1 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, the program is intended to help mobilize health care workers and expedite vaccines for the overall safety of our country. Right at Home, a global in-home care organization with over 35,000 caregivers nationwide, is focused on helping the NMHA do just that.

“What the NMHA has put together is truly remarkable,” said Kerin Zuger, Chief of Strategic Growth for Right at Home. “Right at Home is dedicated to doing whatever we can to support getting home care professionals back to work, and putting an end to the devastation clients, caregivers and the country has endured.”

The Flex for Checks program is set up to reward home care agencies and their workers and clients for getting vaccinated and encouraging other community members to do the same. The more people a participant of the program encourages to get vaccinated, the larger financial reward the participant receives.

“The deep experience and tremendous talents of our agency partners are crucial to the deployment of our Flex for Checks program,” said Burgess Harrison, Executive Director, NMHA. “Nothing like this has been done before in the manner where home care agencies, workers, consumers, pharmacies and software companies come together and flex their arms in the fight of our lives against COVID-19.”

Unvaccinated home care workers are eligible to receive $75 per shot to get vaccinated and $25 per shot thereafter. Non-home care workers are eligible to receive up to $50 per shot. Beyond that, any participant or agency can receive an additional $25 for anyone they encourage to register and get vaccinated. “For those living on limited income, this may be just the incentive they need,” said Zuger.

The NMHA is also offering toolkits, training and support to provide answers and unbiased information from reputable sources, so home care business owners can speak confidently to their staffs.

For additional information on how to participate in this program, please visit www.flexforchecks.org.

About the NMHA: The National Minority Health Association, founded in 1988 by Dr. David L. Dalton, Chairman, and CEO, UNIVEC Conglomerate, Inc. (UNVC), achieved its initial mission of ensuring the establishment of Offices of Minority Health in all 50 states. Today the NMHA is adding to its mission and deploying new programs that utilize patient-centered, value-based care, and new ways of enhancing care to patients where they are, lowering costs, and improving outcomes for minority and underserved communities. Right at Home Joins Coalition to Bring More Care to the Home Setting

2021-05-24T10:40:26-04:00May 24th, 2021|Tags: , , , , |

OMAHA, Neb. — Right at Home, a leading global in-home care franchise system with over 650 provider locations in seven countries, announced that it has joined Moving Health Home, a coalition of innovative companies in their fields that is exploring ways to move more health care into the home setting. Right at Home joined the Washington, D.C.-based group that includes Amazon Care, hospital groups and in-home care providers to collaborate on meeting consumer demand for care at home.

Formed in March 2021, Moving Health Home members are working to change federal and state policies to enable the home to be a clinical site of care. The pandemic has put into sharper focus the urgent need for safe and reliable in-home care. Moving Health Home advocates for increased access to high-quality home-based services and pushes for permanent flexibility to transfer or treat patients in their home when it is found to be clinically appropriate.

“Moving Health Home members believe home-based care affords an opportunity to deliver significantly more clinical care in the setting most people prefer, and to approach care in a more holistic way,” said Krista Drobac, Founder of Moving Health Home. “Right at Home will be helpful in advocacy efforts to integrate the home as a site of clinical care, utilizing and sharing their firsthand knowledge and lessons learned from providing care in the home.”

Brian Petranick, President and CEO of Right at Home, said, “Recognizing we are in a consumer-driven industry, where aging adults want to be at home, we are encouraged to see coalitions like Moving Health Home focused on ensuring care can be delivered where the patient is most comfortable, leading to improved satisfaction and outcome.”

Right at Home continues to build strong strategic partnerships that allow the provider to deliver collaborative, quality care. For over 25 years, Right at Home’s focus has been on the consumer, putting their needs first. “As health care costs continue to rise, and since more than one in seven Americans is an older adult, it is critical that all stakeholders work together to develop affordable models of care, while keeping consumer choice in mind,” Petranick said.

Right at Home was one of the first providers to develop and implement a hospital-to-home model in 2007. The results of the program showcased how the inclusion of home care in the overall post-acute continuum can dramatically impact outcomes and readmission rates. From there, Right at Home has continued to innovate, working with their partners to develop collaborative care programs, virtual care models, and models for a skilled nursing facility at home.

Right at Home Names Kimberly Speaks of Hilton Head, South Carolina, as National Caregiver of the Year

2020-07-08T12:45:49-04:00July 8th, 2020|Tags: , , , , |

Speaks Is Recognized as a Standout Caregiver Among More Than 25,000 Caregivers for Providing Clients With Exemplary Care.

OMAHA, Neb. — Leading in-home care franchise Right at Home is proud to announce that Kimberly Speaks has been named this year’s recipient of its National Caregiver of the Year award.

Speaks has been a member of the Right at Home family for seven years, working as a caregiver in Hilton Head, South Carolina, for franchisee Gregg Fulton. She quickly became one of the most valuable members of the Right at Home Hilton Head care team. Speaks lacked formal caregiver training when she started at Right at Home, but she took every opportunity to expand her professional care knowledge and eventually became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

“There is no one more deserving of this year’s award than Kimberly, as she leaves a profound impact on all of the clients she serves and their families and medical providers,” Fulton said. “Everyone knows and commends Kimberly for her positive attitude, professional care and unending patience. She is a huge asset to the Hilton Head team and to the Right at Home brand.”

Speaks’ natural passion for caregiving and desire to learn truly embody Right at Home’s mission “to improve the quality of life for those we serve,” making her more than deserving of this esteemed recognition.

“Kimberly lives out our belief to provide the Right Care for the Right Reasons in the Right Way,” said Mike Flair, Vice President of Operational Excellence and Learning at Right at Home. “She is the Right Person in the caregiving role, and we couldn’t be luckier to have her as a valued member of our team.”

Right at Home caregivers are nominated for the award by Right at Home franchisees. Caregivers are selected by an independent group of professionals in the healthcare industry based on the following criteria: character, client impact, brand ambassadorship, team spirit and professional development. Speaks has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to providing compassionate and personalized care that has made an impact on both clients and their loved ones, and her commitment to going above and beyond the call of duty was mentioned numerous times.

“Kim has consistently cared for my mom beyond 40 hours each week,” Right at Home Hilton Head client Aisha said. “In addition to preparing and serving meals, housekeeping, laundry, and my mother’s activities of daily living, she regularly agrees to come in a few hours early to assist my mom at her various medical appointments. She has developed a professional and much respected rapport with my mom’s medical team. Kim takes perfect notes and provides excellent updates to both Mom’s nurse and me.”

Glowing reviews of Speaks’ caregiving are abundant. Another one of Speaks’ clients, Iman, echoed a similar sentiment when recounting Speaks’ care for her mother.

“Over the last three years, I can honestly say that I have always seen Kim patiently attending to my mother,” Iman said. “This has not always been an easy task. My mom’s Alzheimer’s has changed her personality, at times, for the worst. Yet Kim is ready to assist my mom and give my dad a much-needed break.”

In addition to honoring Speaks on a national scale, Right at Home recognized four caregivers at the regional level for their outstanding commitment to their clients. This year’s Region Caregivers of the Year are:

  • West Region Caregiver of the Year: Aleta Pesce of Northwest Orange County, California (franchisees Grace and Vernon Atwood).
  • Central Region Caregiver of the Year: Ernestine Lyons of Southwest Kansas City, Kansas (franchisees Kami and Scott Sjoberg).
  • Northeast Region Caregiver of the Year: Karl Beaucamp of Lima, Ohio (franchisee Sandra Bullock).
  • Southeast Region Caregiver of the Year: Fletcher Hester of DurhamChapel Hill, North Carolina (franchisee Ken Helmuth).

Going the extra mile to provide exceptional care for those in need of at-home assistance often comes down to the little, everyday things. Right at Home is proud to recognize the exemplary caregivers within its system whose purpose-driven work betters the lives of those they are entrusted to serve.

Right at Home to Move Headquarters to New Building in Omaha’s Aksarben Village

2019-12-31T12:08:52-05:00December 31st, 2019|Tags: , , , , |

The in-home healthcare brand’s corporate team will enter the new office in mid-January, beginning a new era of growth for the company.

OMAHA, Neb. — Right at Home is about to get a new home. The premier in-home care brand, which provides services from more than 500 franchised and corporate-owned locations across the United States and in seven other countries, is moving its headquarters to a new building in Omaha’s Aksarben Village. The company will occupy the fourth and fifth floors at 6700 Mercy Road starting in mid-January.

The move marks a notable change for Right at Home, which outgrew its existing space a few years ago and has relied on an annexed location to accommodate its growing team. The new office will bring the entire corporate team back together under one roof just in time to celebrate the company’s 25th Anniversary year.

“It’s an exciting time for Right at Home,” said Brian Petranick, Right at Home President and CEO. “We continue to expand our foothold in the home care industry, allowing us to provide care to more seniors and adults with disabilities, which is sorely needed due to the waves of baby boomers turning age 65 every day. The new headquarters will allow us to enhance the support provided to all of our offices, utilizing the best of current technology. It will also provide a great environment for our current and future employees. We are truly thrilled with the new building and look forward to continuing on as a resident of Aksarben Village in Omaha for years to come.”

The new headquarters will feature innovative designs that enhance collaboration, promote employee health, and offer flexibility, making it appealing to the workers of today. There are a number of traditional meeting rooms, as well as open areas for collaboration. Right at Home employees will also enjoy “touchdown stations” that will allow them to work from virtually any point in the office, as well as ample “phone booths” for private calls. The focal point of the office is the two-story entry that captures the history, culture and spirit of Right at Home. The environment outside of the office also supports Right at Home’s commitment to its employees. Aksarben Village is one of the most vibrant and active areas of Omaha. Walking trails, a health club, multiple restaurants, outside seating, and Stinson Park are just some of the features of the area.

The space was designed to accommodate Right at Home’s expansion over the next 10 years and beyond as the company continues to fulfill its mission of improving the quality of life for those they serve.
