After an impromptu visit to 30 Minute Hit for a dynamic workout with her friends, Teri Brewer fell in love with the boxing and kickboxing concept and signed up for a membership. Although she had never boxed before, Brewer was drawn to the boutique fitness franchise and, in 2010, she opened her 30 Minute Hit location in Burnaby, British Columbia.

“The jobs I had at the time just supported my life, but fitness was my passion. I absolutely fell in love with the 30 Minute Hit concept. I couldn’t imagine trying to start my own facility, and franchising is really what sold me. It was a no-brainer, and I said, ‘I am going to do this.’ I literally made my passion my job,” she said.

Looking back at her 12 years as an owner, Brewer described what has kept the gym going strong all this time: “the members. At first, I bought it because I felt passionate about fitness and absolutely fell in love with the kickboxing and boxing workouts, but the members have resonated the most with me. They come in and have changed their lives in ways that we never even thought they could. It is so much more than a workout; it is a commun-hit-ity,” she said.

Brewer also noted that the hard work she put in at the onset of opening her 30 Minute Hit location helped her create a strong business and develop a positive work-life balance. She said: “You have to show up in the beginning and put your time in to get it off the ground, and that effort gives you a better work-life balance in the end. Location is also key; where you situate yourself is a major factor in the success of the business. If the gym is out of someone’s way, they might not do it, but if you make it easy to include in a member’s routine, they will make it happen.”
