Treating Everyone Like Family

Darrin Hewartson opened his NaturaLawn® of America location in Leesburg, Virginia, in 1992. At the time, he had never seen a lawn care company that didn’t use a long list of chemicals. He was attracted to the company’s innovative, proprietary blend of organic-based products and biological controls that address the root of lawn care problems.

Hewartson’s family shares his appreciation for NaturaLawn of America’s environmentally friendly approach, and many members have joined his team, including his son, son-in-law, nephew and two of his daughters. Together, they have built a family business that generates more than a million dollars in annual services for Loudoun County, Virginia. Along with the organic-based lawn care, they also offer all-natural Tick Ranger and Mosquito Ranger treatments to the community they serve. One of Hewartson’s daughters, Sydney Tassi, works as the office manager during the week and picks up nursing shifts on weekends.

“My relationship with my dad has never been stronger,” Sydney said. “And I have two kids now. I worked out of the office with my dad, and now my first child is obsessed with my dad and is his favorite person in the world just because he got to see him every day, all day.”

Sydney’s husband also works for the business as a lawn technician, and because it’s a family business, they’ve found flexibility in balancing time with their children. As a mother, Sydney strongly believes in the NaturaLawn mission as well.

“I appreciate trying to use more natural, healthier ingredients because I am passionate about using fewer chemicals,” she explained. “I’m a mom, so I’m very restrictive about what I’m okay with my kids consuming. I really do appreciate that.”

Hewartson loves that the NaturaLawn company is also family oriented. Every year, the company hosts owners’ meetings and encourages franchisees to bring their families. Through these events, many franchisees and their families have grown close over the years. Now that his children have their own children, Hewartson brings his grandchildren along to the annual owners’ meetings.

“They take the time to get to know your family,” he said. “They really do.”
