Todd and Jane Spears both built successful careers, but the Texas couple and parents of three sought entrepreneurship to generate extra income and provide for a solid retirement. Todd, an IT project manager, and Jane, a flight attendant, needed a passive investment option to keep their jobs.

In 2007, the couple became franchise owners of their first Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids, salons that cater to children. While Jane oversees all accounting aspects of the business – which she does while traveling – Todd manages a loyal staff he credits with keeping operations running smoothly while he is at his job. “It has been something that we can do and fit our lives,” Todd said. The have since expanded their business and now own four locations in San Antonio.

While it is no easy feat, Todd shared how he strikes a balance between two careers, family time – and even tennis four times a week.

On his days off, Spears visits his stores to touch base with his staff and talk with customers. “It’s sometimes really challenging,” he admits, “but most of the time it’s really rewarding.”
