FRANCHISEE OF THE MONTH

Jason Cooper of Des Moines, Iowa, became a City Wide Facility Solutions franchisee in November 2022. Cooper had been looking into buying an existing service-based business when he came across an online video about franchising.

“Up to that point, I never considered the possibility of buying a franchise,” he said. “I loved that City Wide provided the opportunity to offer more than just one service. I could sell HVAC and plumbing, but I could also sell window washing, janitorial and 20-plus other services. I wasn’t stuck in one niche.”

The brand provides one point of contact for more than 20 janitorial and maintenance services for businesses throughout North America. Its more than 100 franchisees operate as general managers to independent contractors in a wide variety of services, including heating, ventilation and air, window cleaning, floor care, handyman tasks, parking lot maintenance and more.

“I like that we have multiple services to offer and that we are the one point of contact for our clients,” said Cooper. “That differentiates us from companies out there and makes life easier for our clients. I also appreciate City Wide’s support and resources provided for continued growth.”

Founded in 1961 and franchised in 2001, City Wide Facility Solutions offers a proven B2B model with a low point of entry, minimal overhead, multiple and recurring revenue streams, large protected territories, superior training as well as support and scalability.

Cooper’s territory serves 12 communities in the Des Moines area and employs six office members, including three facility solutions managers who oversee accounts, a sales manager, a sales associate and an office manager. His location has a roster of about 80 vetted and ensured contractors who provide maintenance in the brand’s wide range of services.

Cooper oversees the location’s day-to-day operations, including everything from sales and marketing to hiring and coaching his team. His location has experienced substantial growth since opening.

“I’m deeply involved in building strong relationships with our clients and ensuring that we deliver exceptional service,” Cooper said. “I also take pride in cultivating a team environment where everyone feels supported and knows what is expected of them.”

The brand provides extensive training, both online and in-person, and covers sales, marketing, operations and financial management on the City Wide University platform. Additional support comes through business performance coaches, podcasts and a strong network of fellow franchise owners.

“City Wide’s level of support, from training and coaching to introductions and a network of experienced franchise owners, made me feel comfortable taking the leap,” said Cooper.

Potential franchisees should possess solid sales and sales management experience, be willing to work hard and be able to juggle multiple responsibilities to build their business. Successful owners are strong leaders who can build relationships with their team and clients, effective communicators, and passionate about delivering exceptional service.

“This business isn’t an out-of-the-box business,” Cooper said. “You do have to put work into it, but all of the tools and resources are there for you to know your next move.”
