FRANCHISEES OF THE MONTH: Brittany & Ryan Mulligan: Blue Kangaroo Packoutz, Long Island, New York

Ryan and Brittany Mulligan of Long Island, New York, became Blue Kangaroo Packoutz franchisees in February 2023. The brand specializes in the removal, safekeeping and pristine restoration of treasured and valuable items from homes and businesses damaged by fire, water and other disasters.

Blue Kangaroo Packoutz stands apart in the restoration industry by focusing solely on a building’s contents. In a recent interview conducted by Brand J, a Blue Kangaroo Packoutz marketing agency partner, the Mulligans talked about their work.

“I always wanted to come shoreside and start my own service-based business,” explained Ryan, a former engineer with the U.S. Merchant Marine. “I found Blue Kangaroo Packoutz was the most service-oriented company that I could think of, helping people protect their items after a fire or a water loss.”

Franchisees carefully identify, wrap, pack, move and store family heirlooms, collectibles, wedding albums, documents and more into climate-controlled warehouses until they can be returned to their owners. The Mulligans work with contractors and insurance adjusters, taking the task of preserving a building’s contents off their plates.

“I think you have to have that helping gene in order to successfully be a Blue Kangaroo Packoutz owner,” said Brittany, who is also a nurse anesthetist. “It’s very vulnerable, and something that might not look like treasure to you and might not have a monetary value necessarily has a tremendous value to them.”

Brittany handles the back-end office work, such as accounting, while Ryan networks and meets with other companies for new business and referrals. Additionally, the Mulligans have a project manager and two employees who oversee their Long Island warehouse.

According to the Mulligans, new franchisees receive hands-on, comprehensive training in all aspects of the business, as well as ongoing support.

“We have a great network of Blue Kangaroo Packoutz owners, and we rely on each other on a regular basis,” Brittany added.

In the long run, the Mulligans’ plans include hiring a general manager so they can step back from the business.

“I think five years from now, 10 years from now, we will be the content restoration experts on Long Island,” Brittany said.
