Robert Sanders was a human resources executive for 20 years, and he served a total of 29 years between active duty and reserves in the U.S. Marine Corps. In addition, he served as a police officer and spent one year in the seminary. It is clear that Sanders has a passion for helping others and giving back. As a youth, he spent time volunteering at retirement homes, which prepared him for his role years later as a caregiver for both his mother and father.
When Sanders decided to start his own business, he knew that he wanted to help seniors remain in their homes as long as possible. He explored starting something on his own, and he considered franchise opportunities. So how did he decide on Senior Helpers?
“They engaged me in meaningful conversations. I really liked the ethics they projected. It was all about providing the best care possible – how the caregiving drives the numbers, and setting goals. They were great listeners,” Sanders said.
As a veteran, Sanders takes everything he learned in the Marine Corps and applies it to his Senior Helpers business daily. “The Marine Corps has a saying: Adapt, improvise, and overcome. That is exactly what you have to do as an entrepreneur. When we first opened, we had permitting challenges, struggles finding an office, and then COVID-19. But, through it all, I’ve been able to endure.”
Sanders advises aspiring business owners: “Think about if you became wealthy overnight. Choose a business that you would still want to do, even if you were wealthy.”
The Senior Helpers franchise recognizes how important veterans are, so the brand helps senior veterans apply for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit program, which pays seniors for in-home care, so they can live comfortably and safely. Veterans, their spouses, and surviving spouses of veterans may also be eligible for this benefit. Senior Helpers is also a member of VetFran and the Military Spouse Employment Partnership, which helps military spouses find jobs.
