COVER STORY

Spartan Floor Coatings is a new and rapidly emerging franchise in the home services sector specializing in high-quality epoxy flooring solutions. This family owned business has taken the market by storm, growing from a single venture into a franchise poised for national expansion. At the helm is CEO Rich Degen, whose extensive experience in marketing and consulting for home services has positioned the brand for success.

For 15 years, Degen ran a marketing consulting firm focused on helping home service businesses grow. His experience in building companies from the ground up to multimillion-dollar success stories laid the foundation for what would become Spartan Floor Coatings. However, this business venture wasn’t initially part of his long-term plans, it was sparked by his son’s entrepreneurial ambitions.

Two years ago, Degen’s teenage son, Cameron Degen, expressed a desire to pursue something other than the traditional college route. He wanted to start his own business in epoxy flooring, a niche within the home improvement sector that had been gaining traction.

“It was a bold move,” Degen said. “But, I believed in him, and in the process we could create. So, I told him we’d build it the way I’ve helped my clients do – step by step, from the ground up.”

The father-son duo then crafted a product line, developed systems and laid the groundwork for the company. On May 14, the day of his high school graduation, Cameron completed his first flooring job. By the end of its first year, the company had generated over $1 million in sales.

In its second year, Spartan Floor Coatings saw exponential growth. It more than doubled its first-year revenue and is projected to end this year with over $2 million in sales, all within the same market. Impressively, Degen’s son was at the forefront of operations, managing both sales and the team’s daily activities.

“He’s built a team, he’s running sales and overseeing everything,” Degen said. “And, all of this in just two years.”

The natural next step for Spartan Floor Coatings was franchising, and the company officially began offering franchise opportunities earlier this year. The brand’s first franchisee, based in Florida, is projected to bring in $1 million in sales in their first year. This early success has garnered significant attention from prospective franchisees, especially given the brand’s inspiring story.

“When people hear that an 18-year-old kid can do this, they realize they won’t fail as long as they follow the system,” Degen said.

By partnering with organizations like FranServe and attending franchise shows across the country, the company is making a strong entrance into the franchise world. With 30 shows lined up over the next year, Spartan Floor Coatings is quickly becoming a household name in the home services industry. Cameron is now fully immersed in the franchise side of the business, traveling to shows and working with potential franchisees.

“We’re just getting started,” Degen said. “The future is bright for Spartan Floor Coatings, and we’re excited to share our journey with others who are ready to grow with us.”

In just two years, Spartan Floor Coatings has gone from a family business to an emerging brand with national potential. With a solid business model, a proven system and a heartwarming story of family and entrepreneurial drive, Spartan Floor Coatings is one to watch in the franchise space.
