You may not be familiar with the HomeVestors® name, but you probably recognize its signs: “We buy ugly houses.”
HomeVestors operates as a national real-estate investment franchise, with owners collaborating to share market information and expand the business. We recently sat down with Mark McKeller, development agent,
to learn more.
Tell us how HomeVestors started.
Ken D’Angelo was a real-estate agent and broker in Dallas back in the ‘70s. People started asking him not to list their homes but to buy them because they needed to sell quickly. So he morphed into the home-buying business. He was advertising directly to sellers; he wasn’t buying off the MLS. That’s the key.
Ken got some of his buddies together and figured out how to share the leads. Every one of them had a more successful business doing it as a group than individually. That was the idea! In 1996, they started franchising.
What should people know about you?
We’re not in the real-estate business. We’re in the people business. Our mission statement doesn’t say anything about real estate; we provide real-life solutions that improve lives.
What makes a great franchisee?
The people who do well in this business aren’t necessarily contractors or real-estate agents. They’re people who understand how to relate to other people. They have good people skills.
What are your core values?
Our core values have to do with our mission statement and the people who we’re with. We want to treat everyone professionally, respectfully, and in a considerate manner. We want to act with honesty and integrity. We want to be team players. We like to look at the glass as half full.
Why is now a great time to launch a HomeVestors franchise?
There’s never not a great time! Our sellers always call us. It has never stopped. Our profits right now are greater than they have ever been in the history of our company.
