Creating a Legacy
John Steele had a 25-year career in telecommunications, beginning in the mid-90s, when the internet was just starting to grow legs. Over time, the commoditization of technology increased, and Steele found that he was no longer able to focus on helping solve clients’ problems and was instead tasked with selling them products.
“It’s always been a big component of my DNA to help my customers solve their problems. The products themselves are important, but providing a solution to their holistic need is a much more fulfilling relationship for both parties,” Steele said.
After spending years in the industry, Steele started to see the need to leave corporate life and build something of his own.
As the global pandemic was winding down, Steele began searching for business opportunities and was contacted by a franchise coach. He hadn’t considered franchising but was quickly drawn to the concept of starting a business with a proven model to accelerate the process. He was presented with a facility management company that provides a one-stop shop for commercial services, including janitorial work, painting and other facility maintenance.
City Wide Facility Solutions quickly rose to the top of Steele’s list for franchise opportunities. The maturity of the model and its unique offering caught his attention, but it was the model’s recession resistance – especially during the pandemic – that sealed the deal.
In November of 2024, Steele opened his location in Toronto and quickly built up his sales team to begin signing clients. Working with local contractors – and building up their businesses alongside his own – was a big draw.
“We help them grow their business vertically – meaning more revenue, more customers – and horizontally, with the ability to expand into other areas because of all the different services that City Wide provides,” Steele said.
For Steele, his first year in business has been an affirming one.
“It’s gratifying to know that I made the right call with City Wide,” said Steele. “All of the factors leading to my decision have been validated and are still as important to me today as they were when I made my initial decision.”
