Below are some interview excerpts.
Currie: Talk to us about this sector and the regulations.
Tropf: On the industry, around the United States, it’s federally illegal, but it’s legal on a state level, which means each state makes their own regulations. There are about 37 states that it’s legal. Some of them are recreational, so anybody can walk into a store and buy it that is of age, similar to a liquor store. Some are medical states, meaning you have a medical ID card issued from an MD. You use that Patient ID card to enter the dispensaries in a medical state. You can divide the country down the middle on the west side and the east side and see a clear difference at where it started. In the west – Colorado, California, Washington, Oregon – these are more free-market states. On the east side, it starts to get more stringent, more medical states rather than recreational. It takes a little bit more to get through the regulations in the medical states. We work to make it a turnkey model.
Ford: There’s a high barrier to entry. There’s licensing, there’s state regulations, but the clients that we work with are vetted for their experience in cannabis. They are vetted for their profitability and differentiation. The services we provide are to assist them and work together to get licenses for the candidates all the way down to the municipal level, finding locations and getting the t’s crossed and the i’s dotted, which can be very complicated. Again, a high barrier to entry with huge, huge, opportunity.
