Although Berekk Blackwell is the president of Daily Jam, he cannot help but think back to what drew him in initially as a customer. According to Blackwell, Daily Jam had a good reputation in the community, possibly due in part to the undeniably warm, happy, and contagious vibe customers felt once inside. Add to that, the locally sourced, high-quality food ingredients used in the scratch kitchen as well as the mouthwatering presentation of each meal made the restaurant a favorite. With all of these attributes, it’s no wonder that when Blackwell was approached by the owners who were looking to sell, he knew he wanted this business.
Once ownership hands were exchanged, Blackwell felt it was most important to maintain the same high-quality ingredients as well as the presentation and preparation processes that local customers enjoyed. As the owner of an already impressive business model, Blackwell committed to the original philosophy and refined only a few processes, such as adding more in-house prepared pastries and cookies to the menu.
With Blackwell’s extensive background in the franchise development industry, his vision from the start was to grow Daily Jam’s breakfast/brunch/lunch concept exclusively through franchising. Having worked with many bigger and older franchise brands in the past, Blackwell knew what not to do when it came to creating franchise growth plans. For instance, every process and standard operating procedure developed for franchisees is reviewed carefully, keeping in mind how each decision could potentially impact how quality is maintained, especially through substantial growth. For example, Blackwell carefully selects vendors and food distributors so that future brands in any area of the country will have access to the same quality ingredients through these contracted relationships.
Not only is Blackwell passionate about the growth of Daily Jam and his customers’ experiences, but he also cares about his employees. Blackwell has expanded and promoted from within and said he feels most rewarded when he can have an impact on his employees and their growth and development. He believes in giving employees the tools to expand their knowledge in any role, knowing that he may be training his staff out of their current positions and on to something bigger and better.
