For over 20 years, BrightStar Care® has been providing families with medical and nonmedical care to help them live their best lives, and it has offered medical staffing solutions to businesses. Founder and CEO Shelly Sun is excited to share the evolution of BrightStar Care, as they celebrate 20 years of serving communities.

“I founded BrightStar Care from the ground up in 2002 after going through a challenging personal experience searching for a home care agency for a family member that would be able to provide both medical and nonmedical care,” shared Sun.

At the time, Sun had realized there was a lack of high-quality, dependable care providers, and if she was having this challenge, there were sure to be others. She went all-in on the business and, 20 years later, has built a large network of home care agencies throughout the country.

“We’re now a national enterprise with more than 365 locations nationwide, servicing nearly 15,000 to 20,000 families per week and employing 15,000 caregivers and 5,700 registered nurses. We generated more than $639 million in systemwide sales in 2021,” she said.

While BrightStar Care is known for its premium in-home care services, its medical staffing capabilities also set it apart from competitors. “We also offer custom medical staffing solutions to corporate entities and hold national accounts with government agencies across distinct patient populations, providing healthcare staff anywhere care is needed. We’re working on growing our corporate-owned footprint to expand our services and payer options. We now have 20 corporate-owned locations under our BrightStar Owned program, and this number will continue to grow over the next few years,” Sun explained.

With all that BrightStar Care already provides, it’s hard to believe there’s more – but there is. “Since I founded the company, our mission and purpose have been to provide clients with the full continuum of care, expand our reach and make home care more attainable for seniors and those in need of care, so they can safely and comfortably age in place.
With this in mind, we hope to align with a broader network in the coming years. By aligning BrightStar Care with a broader network, we open the possibility for more seniors and those needing access to home care to obtain it. The industry is consolidating, and I am cognizant of the responsibility for brand sustainability to innovate and have an open mind to align with a larger organization. Tapping into Medicare Advantage will help ensure our brand is around for many years to come,” she said.

Given BrightStar Care’s higher standard for quality, it has been recognized by the Joint Commission as the Enterprise Champion for Quality for the past 10 years. BrightStar continues to be recognized as a leader and innovator in the industry and is continually ranked among the fastest-growing private companies in America on the prestigious Inc. 5000 annual list and in the Franchise Times Top-500 list. BrightStar Care has held a steady presence on both lists for over a decade.
